About Us

The NC Alpha Chapter of Pi Beta Phi was born out of the first society for women at UNC — Beta Alpha Phi, commonly known as the “Boffins.” In 1920, there were only 43 women enrolled at UNC. Beta Alpha Phi was founded in January 1921 by a group of five courageous women. The society upheld strict secrecy around their names and activities, but petitioned Pi Beta Phi for a charter in November of 1922. Almost one year later, the North Carolina Alpha chapter of Pi Beta Phi was installed over a three day period of ceremonies from September 27-30, 1923. A total of fifteen women were initiated into the chapter, prompting the legacy of what has become a century of sisterhood. We are honored to share this history with these women and all of the sisters who have strengthened the bonds of this chapter over the years. Currently, our Pi Phi chapter is home to 200+ active collegiate members — each of which possesses Pi Phi core values. Through Integrity, Lifelong Commitment, Honor and Respect, Personal and Intellectual Growth, Philanthropic Service to Others, and Sincere Friendship, our members aim to create lifelong bonds and make a positive impact on the UNC Chapel Hill community.
